Kinesthesia: Understanding Body Sense Positioning
Kinesthesia, also known as proprioception, is the body’s ability to sense its movement, position, and spatial orientation. For example, when you move your arm, your brain and body instinctively know its new position. However, chronic back pain can disrupt this sense, making normal movements uncomfortable and challenging.
Chronic back pain can make individuals feel disconnected from their bodies, altering their perception of movement. The pain causes muscle tension, leading to unfamiliar and awkward positional changes that strain the musculoskeletal system. These adaptations often go unnoticed, increasing the risk of further injury.

Kinesthesia and Chronic Back Pain
When kinesthesia is impaired by chronic back pain, individuals may misjudge their body’s capabilities, such as overestimating or underestimating their ability to lift or move objects. This can result in:
- Muscle strains
- Ligament sprains
- Severe injuries
Back pain prompts compensatory movements that deviate from proper form. These awkward adjustments, whether intentional or unconscious, can exacerbate pain or cause new injuries as individuals try to protect their backs.
Motor Control Challenges
Motor control, the ability to regulate movement, is also affected by back pain. Individuals may adjust their movements to avoid discomfort, leading to unnatural and potentially harmful motion patterns. These adaptations can make the body overly cautious or prone to overcompensation, increasing injury risk.
Enhancing Kinesthesia with Yoga
Yoga is an effective way to rebuild kinesthetic awareness and support back health. It trains the body to recognize and interpret signals from muscles, joints, and tendons, improving coordination and control over time. Regular practice helps individuals regain a sense of proper movement, reducing the risk of pain and injury.
Recommended Yoga Poses
Here are a few yoga poses to improve kinesthetic awareness and alleviate back pain, along with guidance on their safe practice:
- Reclining Hand-to-Big-Toe Pose
- Lie flat on your back.
- Grasp your big toe, foot, or ankle with both hands, or use a yoga strap if needed.
- Hold the pose comfortably for as long as possible.
- Switch sides and repeat.
- Practice twice daily.
- Benefits: Stretches lower back muscles, prevents spasms, and relieves pain.
- Avoid if you have a herniated disc or retrolisthesis.
- Bridge Pose
- Lie on your back with knees bent and arms resting by your sides.
- Press into your elbows and feet to lift your torso off the floor.
- Hold and repeat 4–5 times daily.
- Benefits: Relieves pain from herniated discs, retrolisthesis, or vertebral fractures.
- Avoid if you have spinal stenosis, anterolisthesis, facet syndrome, or quadratus lumborum spasms.
- Lord of the Fishes Pose
- Consult a professional for proper execution, as this seated spinal twist requires precise form.
- Benefits: Enhances spinal mobility and body awareness.
- Avoid improper form to prevent injury.
Chiropractic Support for Kinesthesia
Maintaining proper body awareness is crucial for preventing back pain and related injuries. A professional chiropractor, like Dr. Alex Jimenez, can help alleviate back pain and guide you in restoring healthy movement patterns. Through targeted adjustments and personalized exercises, chiropractic care supports proper form and strengthens the body to prevent future injuries.

Body Composition
Magnesium
Magnesium supports a healthy immune system. It helps maintain:
- Healthy bone structure
- Muscle function
- Insulin levels
Magnesium assists the body with ATP energy metabolism and acts as a calcium blocker. This reduces cramping and aids in muscle relaxation after physical activity/exercise. Magnesium is essential in biochemical reactions in the body. A slight deficiency can lead to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and a higher risk of insulin resistance. Many magnesium-rich foods are high in fiber, like:
- Dark leafy greens
- Nuts
- Legumes
- Whole grains
Studies have shown that consuming a diet rich in Magnesium also provides a higher intake of dietary fiber. Dietary fiber aids in:
- Digestion
- Helps control weight
- Reduces cholesterol
- Stabilizes blood sugar
The best sources of Magnesium include:
- Spinach, Swiss chard, and turnip greens
- Almonds and cashews
- Flax, pumpkin, and chia seeds
- Cocoa
