I’m thrilled to share some insights into one of the most exciting frontiers in medicine today: peptide therapy. To understand their power, we first need to define what they are.
Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the fundamental building blocks of proteins. The exact definition varies slightly depending on where you are in the world. In the United States, we generally consider a chain of two to 40 amino acids to be a peptide. Once it exceeds 40, it’s classified as a protein. In Europe and much of the world, that threshold is 50 amino acids.
What’s truly important is their function. Peptides are not synthetic drugs in the conventional sense; they are biological messengers. Almost all the peptides we use are naturally occurring substances, designed by the body itself to orchestrate critical processes. They work by enhancing the body’s innate signaling pathways for regeneration, repair, and homeostasis (the state of internal balance).
- Peptides vs. Proteins: Peptides are smaller and can signal specific cellular functions with high precision.
- Biological Messengers: They instruct cells on how to behave, promoting healing and optimizing function.
- Natural Origin: Most therapeutic peptides are bioidentical to what our bodies produce.

Most of the peptides we discuss, like GHK-Cu or BPC-157, are what I call “external directors.” They are too large to simply pass through the cell membrane. Instead, they function like a key fitting into a specific lock.
- Binding: The peptide travels through the bloodstream and binds to a specific receptor on the outer surface of its target cell.
- Signaling Cascade: This binding event triggers a cascade of biochemical reactions inside the cell.
- Instruction: The cell is instructed to perform a specific action, such as producing more collagen, reducing inflammation, or initiating a repair process.
This lock-and-key mechanism is what makes peptides inherently safe. For instance, GHK-Cu, or blue copper peptide, is naturally found in our saliva and blood plasma. When an injury occurs, its levels rise, and it signals skin and connective tissue cells to ramp up the synthesis of collagen types 1 and 3, accelerating wound healing and tissue repair. Because they rely on receptor sites, they are subject to receptor site desensitization, which is why we often “cycle” peptide therapies (e.g., five days on, two days off) to maintain their effectiveness.
Bioregulators: The Internal Architects
Bioregulators are a fascinating subclass of peptides, typically consisting of just two to four amino acids. Their small size allows them to operate differently.

Because bioregulators do not rely on surface receptors, they do not cause desensitization and can be taken daily without losing efficacy. The pioneering research on bioregulators was conducted by Professor Vladimir Khavinson, who discovered their remarkable anti-aging and restorative properties. In one landmark 20-year study, patients taking extracts from the thymus and pineal glands (sources of key bioregulators) experienced a lifespan extension of up to 50% compared to a control group.

A common question I receive from patients is, “Are these treatments safe?” The truth is, peptides are remarkably safe precisely because of their targeted, lock-and-key mechanism. When you hear regulatory bodies mention “unknown risk factors” for a peptide like BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound), it’s important to understand that it simply means there isn’t a large body of FDA-sanctioned human trials. However, it also means there are no known risk factors. In the case of BPC-157, there has never been a single reported adverse event or drug interaction in human clinical trials.

One of the most convenient methods is through oral, enteric-coated, multi-phase capsules. Peptides are chains of amino acids, and if exposed to stomach acid, they will be broken down. The enteric coating is designed to resist stomach acid, dissolving only in the more alkaline environment of the small intestine for optimal absorption. This is why we advise patients to take these capsules on an empty stomach with a full glass of water.
