Innovative TriWest Healthcare Alliance Goals

TriWest Healthcare Alliance, a nationwide company which assists veterans with their health care issues, launched a new movement center in Downtown El Paso, where the company planned to hire approximately 225 employees in the city in order to attract as many veterans as possible to fill those positions.

David McIntyre, president and CEO of TriWest Healthcare Alliance quoted, “It made good business sense to expand our footprints here considering El Paso is one of the top 10 best cities for veterans in the United States, and out only line of business at TriWest is to serve veterans”.

TriWest operates as an associate with the Department of Veterans Affairs, or VA, in executing the Veterans Choice Program for veterans in El Paso as well as throughout 28 states. The Veterans Choice Program grants veterans the opportunity to obtain care out in the community if they cannot receive care at the VA within 30 days or it they live more than 40 miles away from the closest Veterans Affairs facility.

“By making veterans a priority, El Paso is setting itself apart from other communities around the country”, U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke, D-El Paso stated, admiring the announcement. “We are attracting jobs, talent, and investment. I am excited that TriWest sees the value and potential in our veterans, in our Downtown and in El Paso”, O’Rourke concluded.

During a news interview back when the new TriWest operations were to begin, Beto O’Rourke mentioned that El Paso was ruling the way for improved healthcare access for veterans. He also strongly believed that El Paso’s initiative on the TriWest Healthcare Alliance operations have been guiding the rest of the nation on how they might be able to fix their veteran healthcare issues. The news conference included El Paso VA Healthcare System Interim Director, Gail Graham and El Paso Mayor, Oscar Leeser.

As a member of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs, O’Rourke praised Under Secretary of Health and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, David Shulkin, for his strategy to enhance and convert the VA. In a November 18 congressional hearing, Shulkin defined a plan to improve care which O’Rourke declared would reflect several of the steps El Paso is taking to focus on veteran’s health care. Beto O’Rourke stated their mission was not yet considered to be accomplished but they were certainly on the right path to success. He continued by explaining the progression of their plans through a suitable team of members.

A hiring fair was handled where David McIntyre disclosed that salaries would be based on El Paso’s market and will largely depend on the positions as well. TriWest is planning to hire for clinical and nonclinical positions. Employment opportunities include positions such as registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and patient services representatives. Annual salaries start at about $35,000 a year and increase depending on the position.

TriWest consultant and Vietnam veteran, Drew Dix, was one of the speakers involved in the TriWest Healthcare Alliance news conference, including city officials and veterans. Dix mentioned that getting a movement center in El Paso was a valuable measure for the economy and for local veterans. “Obviously employment, but it also helps veteran’s employment because we are reaching out for veterans. It’s so important because veterans understand veteran issues”, Dix said.

Drew Dix, 71, was in the Army Special Forces in the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam. He was awarded the Medal of Honor from President Lyndon Johnson in 1969.

McIntyre expressed how much of a privilege it was to create new employment opportunities for those individuals with a sincere interest in distributing the health care needs of the nation’s veteran’s. And, after thanking McIntyre and his team at TriWest for choosing El Paso, El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser announced how TriWest’s commitment to veteran’s healthcare as well as their promise towards employing veterans and their families is true to the priorities of City Council. He then continued by thanking O’Rourke for his leadership.

“I would like to personally thank him for his dedication to helping advance the El Paso Economy”, Lesser said.
