West campus selected to host first ACA Sports Council regional event, June 10-11

Palmer College of Chiropractic’s West campus in San Jose, Calif., has been selected to host the first of four monthly American Chiropractic Association Sports Council (ACASC) regional mini-conference events designed to “bring cutting-edge sports-focused courses” to different regions of the country from June to September.

The Western Regional mini-conference, “Biomechanics and Movement,” will take place at the West campus the weekend of Saturday, June 10 (8 a.m. to 7 p.m.), and Sunday, June 11 (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.).

The ACA Sports Council’s three other Regional mini-conference events include:

  • July 29-30 in Orlando (“Neurology and Concussion”)
  • 12-13 in New Jersey (“Nutrition and Epigenetics”)
  • 9-10 in St. Paul, Minn. (“Repair and Recovery”)

Program-topics for the Western Regional event at Palmer’s West campus (which offers 12 hours of relicensure credits) include “Back to the Foot: Understanding the Role of Foot Biomechanics in the Effective Assessment and Treatment of Low Back Pain,” featuring guest-speaker Nick Studholme, D.C., CCSP®, CCEP, FAFS, who maintains a practice in Denver, Colo. (where he is team chiropractor for the Colorado Rapids and Chiropractic consultant for the University of Denver Sports and Athletics Program), and “BioMechanical Considerations in Assessing and Treating the Athletic Shoulder,” presented by Ryan Kendrick, BPhty, MPhtySt.

Each ACA Sports Council Regional mini-conference offers 12 hours of relicensure credit  – and ACA Sports Council members receive a $50 registration-discount!

The two-day program (which is limited to just 50 attendees) also includes, “California Ethics,” a two-hour interactive class (presented by past CCA President David Benevento, D.C, CCSP®, in a fun “game-show” format) that will focus primarily on rules and regulations pertaining to the practice of chiropractic in the state of California, along with discussion regarding ACA guidelines.

The fee for doctors is $347, and the student-fee is $197 (with lunch provided on Saturday). Current ACA Sports Council members receive a $50 registration-discount. Non-member student-registrations will receive a free year’s ACA Sports Council membership.

“The ACA Sports Council is excited to present its first regional mini-conference at Palmer West, whose student Sports Council chapter is among the largest and most-active, as well as among the most well-represented at our annual Symposium,” said Shane Espinoza, D.C., CCSP®, ACA Sports Council president.

“It is an honor for Palmer West to have been selected as the first Regional symposium site,” said Edward Feinberg, D.C., DACBSP® (West ’84), West professor, who has served as faculty advisor to the campus’ Student ACA Sports Council chapter since its founding in 1994.

“Due, in part, to a proposal submitted several years ago by Palmer West student Sports Council members, student involvement in ACA Sports Council has grown dramatically, and student programs in clinical education, research, and mentorship are now part of the annual Symposium,” noted Dr. Feinberg, who received the ACA Sports Council’s “Sports Chiropractor of the Year” award in 2011.

“The future of sports chiropractic is in the hands of those students who have a strong desire to continue to grow, learn and become part of communities that need sports chiropractors,” said Dr. Espinoza, who served on the medical team of the U.S. Olympic Time Trials in 2008, and again in 2010, and has provided care at many other sporting events in the Portland metro area where his practice is based.

“This journey starts with the first regional event at Palmer West — and will only grow bigger and stronger. This is an exciting time to be a sports chiropractor, and we can’t wait to see you there!”
