Symptoms Neck Pain: Neck pain is one of the most common types of pain experienced by the general public. Many types of conditions and injuries can cause neck pain, such as arthritis in the neck or a whiplash injury from an automobile accident. Neck pain can range from milder degrees of irritation and discomfort to a more severe and debilitating degree, but there are also other symptoms associated with cervical spine pain.
Besides neck pain, another common symptom associated with cervical spine pain is a decreased neck range of motion. The neck range of motion is the degree to how much an individual can bend, extend, rotate, and laterally bend their head and neck. People with neck pain also suffer from stiffness, tight muscles in the area, and aching or burning, which is the leading cause for the limited mobility of the neck.
Certain types of headaches can also be caused by neck pain. Tension in the muscles of the neck along with trigger points and knots in the tight bands of the muscle can cause these headaches known as cervicogenic headaches. Injuries and spinal disc conditions or joint arthritis can also cause headaches together with neck pain.
Upper extremity numbness with arm pain, hand numbness, and a weakened grip can also be symptoms associated with neck pain, although these more serious symptoms usually indicate the presence of a cervical myelopathy, or spinal cord compression. Degenerations of discs or a herniated disc in the cervical spine, most commonly seen in the elderly, can cause spinal cord compression. If youβre experiencing neck pain accompanied by numbness and weakness of the arms and hands, you should consider visiting a chiropractic doctor or physical therapist to diagnose and begin treatment for your symptoms.
