Diabetic Neuropathy Treatment

Share

Neuropathy is a term that refers to damage or injury to the nerves. People who suffer from diabetes frequently experience this disorder due to the abnormal range of sugar in their blood. In cases of diabetes where the blood sugar is alarmingly high, the nerves that are passing through the blood vessels can become damaged. Managing diabetes is extremely important to treat neuropathy. With proper treatment, the affected person can lead a normal life.

Neuropathy may cause further complications if the blood glucose levels are not within a normal range, therefore, it is essential to continue taking any prescribed diabetes medicines to keep the blood sugar levels under control. People with severe diabetes may be advised to take insulin injections.

Regular exercise is also one of the best ways to manage blood sugar levels. By remaining active, many complications including neuropathy issues can be avoided. Exercising for a minimum of 30 minutes can be enough to keep the condition under control. Together with the appropriate exercise routine recommended by a specialist, following a diabetic diet is also important.

With diabetes, the nerves located in the feet are more susceptible to damage. It is also extremely important for a person affected by diabetic neuropathy to take proper care of their feet by applying moisturizing lotions on a regular basis.

The use of infrared laser light therapy can also be used to treat diabetic neuropathy and its symptoms. People treated with Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) have shown progressive improvement in nerve motor function, according to a recent study conducted by the Harvard Medical School. Using infrared laser light therapy to treat neuropathy is beneficial because it can increase the blood flow to damaged or injured nerves, decrease pain and muscle spasms, and stimulate proper nerve transmissions, among other benefits.

Certain supplements can also be beneficial for treatment of diabetic neuropathy. Alpha-Lipoic acid, a powerful antioxidant, was found to be safe to treat this condition as it is an effective remedy for relieving pain. Benfoatiamine and vitamin B12 supplements have various health benefits and have also been prescribed to treat neuropathy.

Diabetes that is not properly controlled can cause many health complications like neuropathy. Following a healthy lifestyle and the best treatment options for each person can play a crucial role in managing diabetes and helping prevent or treat diabetic neuropathy.
