Neck Pain

Spasmodic Torticollis

Spasmodic torticollis, also known as cervical dystonia, is a medical condition in which the neck muscles involuntarily contract and causes the posture of the head to twist abnormally or turn to its side or, in some cases, tilt forward or backward. Torticollis may also cause muscle spasms or pinched nerves that could result in symptoms of pain and discomfort.

Spasmodic torticollis, or cervical dystonia, is considered a rare disorder that can occur at any age but is most often diagnosed in middle-aged people, women more than men. The symptoms are known to progress gradually and reach a stage where the condition stabilizes. A person affected by cervical dystonia may experience abnormal head movements in a single direction or in different directions. Other symptoms include neck pain that radiates from the neck to the shoulders, accompanied by severe headaches.

There is no cure for this condition, but most cervical dystonia treatment methods focus on relieving the impairing and debilitating symptoms. Stretches and strengthening exercises appropriate to the degree of the condition are effective in improving posture and alleviating the pain and discomfort associated with dystonia in the neck. Certain types of therapy are also known to decrease or stop the muscle spasms caused by the condition. Dr. Alex Jimenez informs us that getting an early diagnosis for cervical dystonia is important in order to start treatment as soon as possible.
