Pain Management Specialists

Pain management specialists are medical or osteopathic physicians who focus on treating pain caused by diseases, disorders, or injuries. Often trained as anesthesiologists or physiatrists, these professionals, also known as interventional pain management specialists, collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including primary care physicians, radiologists, psychiatrists, oncologists, nurses, chiropractors, physical therapists, and alternative medicine practitioners.

Education and Training

After completing medical school and a one-year internship, pain specialists undergo residency training in fields like anesthesiology, physical medicine, or neurology, followed by a one-year fellowship in advanced pain management techniques. These professionals pursue ongoing education to stay current in their field.

Goals of Pain Management

The primary aim of pain management is to reduce the frequency and intensity of acute or chronic pain, with the ultimate goal of alleviating it entirely. Treatment plans are designed to restore well-being, enhance daily functioning, and support activities such as returning to work or school, while reducing reliance on medications. Multidisciplinary approaches incorporate various therapies to achieve these functional goals.

Types of Pain and Treatment

Pain specialists address both acute and chronic pain:

  • Acute Pain: Sharp and severe, often signaling an immediate issue, such as touching a hot surface or slamming a finger in a door.
  • Chronic Pain: Persistent for six months or longer, ranging from mild to severe, such as spinal arthritis (spondylosis).

Conditions treated include:

  • Degenerative diseases
  • Facet joint pain
  • Sciatica
  • Cervical and lumbar spinal stenosis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Vertebral compression fractures
  • Whiplash

What to Expect During a Visit

A visit to our clinic mirrors standard medical appointments but focuses on identifying and managing pain. The process includes:

  • A physical and neurological examination
  • A review of medical and pain history

The specialist may ask questions such as:

  1. On a scale of 0 to 10 (10 being the worst), how severe is your pain?
  2. When did the pain begin?
  3. What were you doing when it started?
  4. Does the pain radiate to other areas?
  5. Is the pain constant or intermittent?
  6. Does the pain worsen at specific times?
  7. What relieves or worsens the pain?
  8. What treatments have you tried, and were they effective?
  9. Do you take over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or supplements?
  10. Are you on any prescription medications?

A body diagram may be used to pinpoint the location, spread, and type of pain.

Diagnosis and Treatment Planning

Accurate diagnosis is critical to developing an effective treatment plan. Misdiagnosis can worsen conditions or cause new injuries. Diagnostic tools may include:

  • X-rays
  • CT scans
  • MRIs

These imaging studies help identify the pain’s source, especially for spinal conditions that may also affect the arms, legs, or feet. Treatment often involves collaboration with specialists such as primary care physicians, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, nurses, chiropractors, physical therapists, and alternative medicine practitioners.
